Abstract

Intensive care unit which is also known as critical care unit has potential for the care of highly sick patients. The ICU contains the multiplex collection of monitors and equipment that support in fatal conditions like respiratory distress syndrome, kidney failure, multiple organ failure and sepsis. Bacterial infections are most frequent cause of distress and death in intensive care unit, having important primary care impact on the period in which patient stay within hospital. According to the WHO 8.7% of hospital acquired infections are due to bacteremia. Bacteremia term used whenever bacteria entered within bloodstream to cause sepsis. It has been reported that ICU patients present a greater tendency for development of nosocomial bacteremia compared to different patients admitted in wards. All this is due to immunosuppression and commonly use of urinary catheters, invasive procedures and all invasive tubes used for mechanical ventilation. It has been listed that Health care associated pneumonia is most common cause of infections within lungs.
